Mission: The Albuquerque Public Library Foundation raises funds to enrich Library programs, services and facilities.
Challenge: Despite support for libraries in bond elections, economic constraints have made public funding inadequate. The libraries struggle to maintain hours, staffing, collections, programs and operations.
Objective: Develop additional sources of funding, including individual donations, grants and corporate contributions, to restore and revitalize library services and operations for people of all ages and resources.
Strategy: The Foundation offers donors flexible, tax-deductible ways, including memorials and bequests, to have an impact on libraries in their neighborhoods and community and to create a personal legacy.

Thanks to the faithful generosity of TLC Plumbing, Heating and Cooling eleven Albuquerque/Bernalillo County public libraries circulate Literacy Kits. These kits are designed for parents or caretakers and young children to enjoy at home and to expand of what was learned at the weekly library story time.
The theme of the kit(s) is based on one of the five components of the American Library Association’s Every Child Ready Read® program: Reading, Writing, Talking, Singing/Rhyming and Playing. Each kit contains an item related to the theme, such as musical toys, alphabet flash cards, puppets and books. The kits facilitate modeling. As Laura Yip, a children’s services staff member at the Central and Unser Library stated, “we don’t know if children always listen, but we do know that they always are watching.” These kits help families ensure that children see and do those things that will prepare them to enter kindergarten or first grade ready to learn. Laura also pointed out that children learn how borrowing works at the library. The kits are such fun often they don’t really want to give them up. Learning that when they return checked out items, they will be able to take home something new is a great lesson both for library use and getting along with others. Library staff have prepared a Tip Sheet for parents and caretakers and one accompanies each kit.
TLC has been supporting this program since 2017. Their support has enriched the lives of many families and contributes to reading readiness for our youngest library customers.
The goal for 2020 is to double the number of kits available and to expand the service to all Albuquerque Bernalillo County public library locations.
Thank you, TLC!
